Introduction of the Research Group

The FASTER Excellence Research Group was established by BME in 2017 with the aim to renew it’s RDI activities by the support of young researchers. Our group focuses dominantly on applied research in cooperation with industrial partners, in the scientific frontiers of power engineering. Head of the group, Dr. Bálint Hartmann has won the Lendület ‘Momentum’ Grant of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2019, which has allowed the establishemnt of the MTA-BME Lendület FASTER Research Group. FASTER is working on the development of a state estimator based modular toolset to assist observability, targeted dispatch and identify grid reinforcement needs in distributed networks.

Achievements

-The research, supported by the ÚNKP 2017 Grant aimed to develop new methods for the calculation of power system inertia, to define the roles of renewable based production and energy storage technologies and to assess the load dispatch between synchronous power systems in light of new inertia criteria. Our group collaborated with MAVIR Hungarian TSO in a three-step research with the focus on power system stability. Results of this cooperation have formulated regulatory content, developed a real-time power system stability support mechanism and finally led to the implementation of a pilot tool, which is capable of estimating the kinetic energy of the Hungarian power system.
Aim of our Lendület Grant in cooperation with E.ON is to develop a state estimator based modular toolset to support the transformation of the Hungarian low-voltage distribution network to a future-proof, smart, innovative, flexible and modern grid.
Our longtime cooperation with DSOs focus on modelling, simulation, business aspects and cost-benefit analysis of the transforming sector. Highlights of previous years include expert work on network development strategies, assessment of energy storage and e-mobility business potentials, development of microgrid services and islanded power supply based on renewable energy sources.
